Things were looking dire for the fleeing group. Simon Peter had to think of something quickly.
Still laying low, he went over to Alessandro, bent down over the body and made the sign of the cross and said, âYes, your horses came in handy, my friend. And thank you for giving us your children. I will see to it that they did not die in vain.â
He made his way back to Preeta, Savi and John John. He said, âI have a plan. We take half our men and fall back west down this street. A fourth of us go north; a fourth of us go south down this street here. We wait it out. When the police come in, they will find Alessandro. We will send him a note. They will think that we think he is still alive. The note will say something to the effect that we went around their guard and will attack from behind them, from the east. They will continue west. At that point, we will block them at the west end, and the north and south contingents can circle back and get them from the east. They will be surrounded.â
They did exactly that. They left the barricade of autos, the horses and Allessandroâs body there at the intersection, and went on foot to their new strategic locations. Even though Simon Peter told Preeta and Savi that they would be safer if they went with the north or south team, the women chose to go west towards town with him.
And there they waited. It was still dark, and they appreciated that. A surprise attack following their apparent retreat would be more efficacious under the cloak of night than under the exposition of light.
While waiting, Simon mentioned his experience in the large, strange building in which his sniper hid. He purposely avoided talking about the woman, and especially that he had killed her. Rather, he concentrated on the immensity of the structure, and the beauty of the inner chamber, but mostly he talked about seeing a man and a woman living together, seemingly sharing a house. âIsnât that strictly forbidden? And doesnât the government have ways to thwart such a forbidden activity?â
Preeta put her hand on his shoulder and said, âAfter we arrive safely in the No-Go Zone, we will have many things to teach you, but for now, to answer your question: Yes, the government has a plethora of ways, both low-tech and high-tech, to catch such criminals. But there is an exception; an exception only for the rich, of course. Just like all throughout history, we have one set of laws for the common people and one set of laws for the elite. There was a short period of time during the 19th and 20th century, before the Clone Warsâin only some countries, mind youâthat tried to make things more egalitarian. And they were largely successful. Probably the best example of that was in the United States of America, which is the very land where we stand now.
